Instead of the contract system that many of us are used to, we will use a simpler method of keeping players. The good news: players can be kept forever (well, really, it'd be mathematically impossible to keep someone longer than 10 years). The bad news: it's going to cost some cash.
All players who are retained will earn a higher salary for the next season. The first time a player is kept, his/her salary will increase by $5. The second time, it will increase by $10. Third time will be $15, fourth will be $20, and so on.
Example: say someone lucked up last year and got Trout for $1. He'd be $6 this year. He'd be $16 next year, $31 in 2015, and $51 in 2016.
Now, time to close some loopholes.
First, only players who have been on a league - as in our league - roster for a sum of 100 days (doesn't have to be the same team) can be retained. Second, no player acquired in September will be allowed to be retained - even if they have met the 100-day requirement. Third, no player with fewer than 130 major-league ABs or 50 major-league IP will be allowed to be kept unless their services were acquired through the auction (or traded for with someone who did so).
Also, some players may be released by one team during the season and signed in-season by another team (or even the same team). If another team has the player at the end of the season and chooses to keep the player...assuming the player can be kept...will have to keep the player at the player's highest salary plus five dollars.
Example 1: Pujols costs $50 in the auction. Team A drops him. Team B gets him for $25 using FAAB. Team B wants to keep Pujols. Pujols's salary is $55.
Example 2: Delmon Young goes for $1 in the auction. He gets dropped. Another team signs Delmon, but he costs $10 using FAAB. Delmon's keeper price: $15.
If the same team wishes to retain a player it has dropped and re-signed, the player must be retained at the price the extension schedule mandates.
Example: I sign Justin Ruggiano for $10 and keep him into next season (for $15). Next year I drop him. Someone else signs him for $5 using FAAB. They release him and I re-sign him for $1. If I want to keep him going into 2015, he'll cost me $25.
Extension schedules stay with players through trades. Not sure this needed to be stated, but just in case.
